Can I make a section group and Notebook?

In the 2007 structure I would like to take a section group and make it a
notebook.

I can create a notebook and copy everything from the section group to it,
but is there an easier way?

In ON 2003 I would just copy the folder to the base ON directory. But it
appears that there is something special about notebook directories and NON-ON
created directories are not recognized by ON.

Is there a way to take a folder in the base ON directory and tell ON to make
it a notebook?

I tried creating a notebook with the same name but ON would not create the
notebook because there was a file with the same name.

Don't know if this would be a useful feature given that Drag-and-drop moves
are so easy, but I am asking?

Have you tried opening a section group as notebook via File, Open
notebook? I have found in previous beta versions that if you use that
command, you can treat a section group as a notebook (and vice versa if
you open the parent folder).

Pat,

If I Open Notebook... and select a folder that is NOT directly under the
"OneNote Notebooks" base ON folder then it does NOT show up as a notebook and
it does not give an error. Just does nothing.

If I select a folder that IS directly under the base folder, it does work.
So I can copy a folder from deep in my ON tree to the base level and then
open it as a Notebook.

Thanks,
Tony

notebook.

It sounds as if you are trying to take something like this:

Major_folder_containing_most_notebooks
|
+-Notebook-1
| |
| +-Section_Group-1.a
| +-Section_Group-1.b
|
+-Notebook-2
|
+-Section_Group-2.a
+-Section_Group-2.b

And convert it to something like this:

Major_folder_containing_most_notebooks
|
+-Notebook-1
| |
| +-Section_Group-1.a
| +-Section_Group-1.b
|
+-Notebook-2
|
+-Notebook-3
+-Section_Group-2.b

Quite frankly, I don't know if ON 07 would handle having a Notebook
contain a folder that was also treated as a separate notebook. I would
highly recommend moving that Section_Group-2.a up to sit directly under
Major_folder_containing_most_notebooks and open it as a separate
notebook. Just close ON 07, move the folder, then open it using the {file
/ Open Notebook } menu command. You can pretty much open any folder on
your computer as a notebook in ON 07. It will just treat it as a Notebook
and create a contents file if it needs one. If there are already ON files
in that folder then ON 07 just uses them.

This may be more difficult if you are using a system where the actual ON
files are on a separate computer and you are only working off of the ON
cache. I would just do the folder moving on the main location where the
original ON files are located.

Is the folder that you're trying to open already contained in another
notebook that you also have opened? In that case, OneNote will not do
anything since the folder is already open. We considered allowing users
to do what it seems you're trying to do, but it turns out you get into
some really weird cases if that happens, so we decided it'd be clearer
to simply navigate to the folder in the containing notebook, instead of
opening it as a separate notebook.

Remember, you don't have to keep all of your notebooks under one parent
folder. You can "open" any folder almost anywhere as a notebook. Even if
it doesn't have any OneNote files in it at all. OneNote 07 will simply
create what it needs and let you start creating new sections etc. This is
the part I really like about ON 07.

Thanks Grant,

Yes, you can open a Notebook anywhere (it does not need to be under the
Onenote base directory). Also, I noticed that when I try and open a folder
that is already open under an open notebook (as mentioned by someone else in
this post), that it highlights that notebook after I try and open the folder
within. I would perfer a more explicit message (but that's just me).
