Can I manipulate Active Directory sync?

Is there some way to be able to designate what information is sync'ed from
Active Directory to the Global Resource pool? For example, suppose an AD
user object contains no email address in Active Directory, but we want to
avoid having the email address wiped out in the Resource Global on Active
Directory sync (actual problem). Is there a way I specify that the email
address can be omitted on synchronization?
