Can I open a Vista word doc on my mac using word 2004

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)

First let me say I am NOT computer literate especially when it comes to mac

I have a few word documents someone sent me using through vista and it comes over as .docx I thought I was smart and changed it to .doc hoping I could open it but when it opens it asks me to CONVERT FILE and gives me a list of options to convert it from, I've tried them all but when it opens it all looks like a bunch of shapes. Can anyone please tell me how to open it correctly so I can read it?

Thank goodness I will most likely never meet anyone so you won't know how inept I really am. But can you or someone tell me what exactly I need to download? The main page when I click on the link is for:
Most Recent Update
Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.1.4 Update
I have office 2004 and my version is 10.4.11 will that work? Or below it is a spot that I can browse for downloads...do I need to do that?

You will need the person sending them to convert/save them in a .doc (2003)
format. This is a normal thing to do. People with office 2007 need to be
aware of who they are sending documents to and save them in the right format.

Sorry, robo, but this is totally inaccurate. Read the replies to this &

You need to click on the section for Office 2004. the updates are up to
I believe now 11.5.2

There are two way to upgrade. in word go to help menu and click on
check for updates.

a list will come back with all the updates you need to run.

You will have to run them in sequential order

11.5
11.5.1
11.5.2

you click on each one in turn allow it to up date, then run the updater
again. repeat until all updates are finished. Doing it by the updater
method though more tedious, is less likely to clobber the Converters in
2008.

If you update all the updaters off of Mactopia but you have to make sure
that once again that you get them all and run them in order lowest
number to highest number. If you download from Mactopia then make sure
all office 2004 applications are shutdown before running updates.

Would someone please help me. I am usually very good at figuring things out but this is driving me crazy. I tried to download the converter in order to open word 2007 documents. It told me that could not find product. I went on the website and it said to remove and reload the word and then download the update. I did this and it said the update was successful. So why can I not open the documents?

Are you trying to just click on it and open it? That didn't work for me.
I have to open word before I can open a document.
Try opening word, then go to open and search for the document manually that works for me.

Good luck, I hope it helps
