Can I play only specified frames of a movie in ppt

J

Jeff Wilson

Hi all,
I have searched the FAQ and Google for answers to this question, but with no
luck. I have several large files (600mb) of hourly imagery from
meteorological satellites. Sometimes we wish to show the whole video but on
other occassions we wish to only show frames 2003 to 2545 etc. Is there a
way I can arrange to have different pages in ppt load and play different
frame ranges. I am happy to do some VB but would like to see some examples.
Ideally I would also like to have controls for speed and step forward
backward frames. The movies are created from single gif images so I have a a
lot of control over which codecs to use. The MS Mpeg4 codec gives me good
quality and size but not sure on the step frame. I note the reference to mci
commands in some of the tutorials, but no examples on how to use them.

many thanks
Jeff Wilson

Are you sure that this is something you want to do in PowerPoint?

Not really, PPT plays the video "as is". You would be much better off
creating the "clip" you want outside of PPT and then inserting it.

Yes you could do this by taking direct control of the MM player via Visual
Basic (or whatever you like) but it is no easy task. It would require
several class modules that really should be writtien in C+.

Michael, Austin and others,

You are correct, I don't necessarily wish to do this in PPT. It would be
convenient as it would allow a group of us to use the one file for many
different teaching topics. I have built a small vb application that controls
the video as I wish and has a small text file that contains the frame
numbers and description of what is on those frames. However maintenance then
is an issue. I read Austin's article on multimedia in ppt and wondered if it
would be possible to do this in ppt ( ie have a page on tropical cyclones
and then have buttons or links on this page that showed tropical cyclones
from the one movie of the year). Another page could have all the snow events
etc. But it sounds as though this is somewhat problematic. I had hoped that
there may be an undocumented feater of mplay32 that allowed you to specify a
filename and starting frame end frame in the command line, or alternatively
access the drivers or dll to do the same.

Thanks

Hi Jeff,

When we did it with satellite imagery we inserted them as an image per
slide. Then we could do a custom show. Though we didn't have anywhere near
the volumes of data you would be trying to use.

Please tell us your PowerPoint / Windows version,
whether you are using vba, whether
your cows are in the corn paddock, or
anything else relevant.

Yes, you can do this if you insert your movie as an object - you'll need to
set the Start Selection and End Selection points though in Media Player -
and that's not mentioned in the URL below.

Look here:

http://www.indezine.com/products/powerpoint/ppvideo3.html#objects

I just tried to insert an object but my computer has no objects with the
names Media Object or Video Object any more - however, I checked several
other systems in my office, and it does work with them.

Having said that, it's best if you used a video splitting application and
inserted the trimmed video inside PowerPoint.

Have a nice day.
