CAN I RECOVER EXCELL DATA FROM UPGRADE?

Several months ago I entered a lot of data on excel with a powerbook
G4 for this research that I am involved with. Within that time I had
automatic updates pop and I installed them in order to have the most
up to date version of excel I am currently using. Anyway I need the
data that I saved several month ago now and when I OPEN THE DOCUMENT
NOTHING IS IN THE DOCUMENT. I have read that sometimes when you have
other apps open when you up grade a glitch happens where old info is
replaced with nothing! So I need to know if there is any recovery
program or company that I may use SOON or information as to what I can
do to retrieve the data!

An upgrade cannot cause a loss of data in an excel workbook.

Are you sure it's the same file - does the creation and modification
date match what you did several months ago?

Have you done a spotlight search for your data?

Did you make a backup of your data any time in the last several months?

I don't know where to find the creation modification date?
But yes I have the file with the correct label and even the headings
within the spreadsheet but there is no infomation inside the files. I
was told by a Excel tech that if you have startup apps running in the
back ground while an update occurs this maybe the root of the problem
of the lost data. So yes an upgrade CAN cause a loss of data in an
excel workbook my friend, TRUST me!

Well, someone told you that something can happen; someone else told
you that something cannot happen. What says the "Excel tech" is the
correct one. For my money, I'd take whatever JE McGimpsey says as
correct (have you browsed this group to see who knows the intimate
details of the software?).

JE McGimpsey (and others) know what they are talking about my friend,
TRUST me!

From my point of view it looks like you either closed without saving

(in error or without realising it, obviously), or deleted the data and
muddled up the file names (I've done that many times), or you've got
something like white text in white cells.

Hi,

This is not an Excel issue. Since it is many months since you entered the
data possibly you saved the file with the headings and then resaved it with a
new name or in a different location after you had entered the data.

You can also loose data by shuting down the MAC without saving the data in
Excel or I suppose, by leaving Excel open and letting the battery run
completely out without save your document. I've never tried that.

Of course someone has mentioned the real key here - did you create a backup.
If the data is not important enough to create a backup then.... well you
will need to reenter it.
