Can I repair a corrupted Word doc stored in Groove 2007?

A document stored in a Groove workspace has become corrupted, it seems. When
I open it, I get a dialog box that says "Word experienced an error trying to
open the file. Try these suggestions...." One of the suggestions is to open
the file with the Text Recovery converter, but there's no way for me to
locate the file directly. I ended up copying the file out of Groove and onto
my desktop and attempting the repair there. (The Open and Repair process did
not work, but the Recover text from any file did -- at least for the text.)

Was there a better solution to this problem than what I came up with? (I
didn't have a backup copy of the workspace in an archive.)

Hi David,

Files stored in a Groove files tool can only be accessed from within
Groove (or through code). It has no regular path for locating the file
on your hard disk.
From that point of view you probably did the right thing.

What you could do as well, is checking whether there's a previous
version of the corrupted file that you can open normally.

- Is the workspace being archived regularly?
Manually (file / save workspace as / archive) or by using Groove Backup
Services (groove server), or by using a third party backup solution for
Groove.

- A workspace member may still have an old version of the file in case
he/she didn't connect Groove for a while. If so, have the person make a
copy of the Word file BEFORE connecting Groove to the network (take
precautions not to connect by default)

Hope this is useful information :)

Thanks for the information. I'm all set in terms of recovering this
particular document and will be better about backing up in the future.

Where on my hard drive are the workspaces stored? I see folders for archives
and templates, but not for the primary workspaces. I'm just curious about
how to monitor the amount of disk space being used by all the workspaces
combined.

Hello David,

The data that is stored in your Groove workspaces is stored in a binary and
encrypted format and is not readable in any program but Groove. You will see
a bunch of files stored in the %username\local settings\application
data\Microsoft\office\Groove\System\Groovebinaryfilestore.xss folder. In
essence, these are your files from your workspaces . You will not be able to
open these files, but you could get an approximate size of this folder by
right-clicking on the folder and chosing properties.

Thanks for the info. Gee, I wonder why I didn't think to look there. Such an
obvious place. 8^)
