I would like to upgrade my Office 2000 Premium (currently on an old Window
98SE machine that I plan to trash) to an equivalent Office 2007 package when
I purchase a new computer running Windows Vista Home Premium. Do I need to
install Office 2000 on the new Vista system before purchasing the Office 2007
upgrade package?

You do NOT have to install the previous version prior to installing the
upgrade. You will need the disk of the older version when you do the
install of the upgrade as the new program will ask to "see" it during the
install process. You will be asked to put the old disk in the drive for a
moment to confirm that the "upgrade" is valid.
