Version: 2008

I need to send a powerpoint made on my macbook with office mac to my teacher at school over email and I don't know if it will work. Will it? I've been having issues doing my school work because of problems like this.

You're using PowerPoint 2008 for Mac, right?

If your teacher is using PowerPoint 2007 for Windows or 2008 for Mac, yes, he/she should have no troubles reading the file.

If your teacher is using PowerPoint 97-2003 for Windows or 2004 for Mac, you will need to go to File - Save As and then save it for PowerPoint 97-2004 (the .ppt format).

There are a few other cases to mention, but this should be enough for you now.

Also, the version issues aside, if your teacher is using Windows but you're using the Mac version of PowerPoint, the presentation may not look exactly the same on your teacher's PC. Specifically, fonts can be a nagging problem. If you are using the Office fonts bundled with Office for Mac, the text should look essentially the same with only very minor differences on the Windows version.

Try going to the Help menu and typing in "working with Windows". Lots of information there.

Hi Jeff;

Not exactly :)

Starting with Office 2000 on the PC & Office v. X on the Mac, MS has
supplied free converters which enable those versions to open Office 2007/8
Open XML file format. If the recipient's software is up to date they should
be able to open the files with either of those versions.

What may be more important is the manner in which the files are sent as
various email clients/servers can wreak havoc with any type of file... But
unfortunately it's the sender who usually takes the heat :)

Hello Bob,

Yes, there is the converter option for older versions of PowerPoint; but that assumes that the recipient has indeed installed the converter and that his/her software is up to date.

There are also issues with the converters - not all items with the 2007/2008 XML-based formats are 100% effectively converted when opened in earlier versions, I have found.

This is why I suggested the safest route: the sender should prepare the file in a format appropriate for the recipient's platform, and confirm that platform ahead of time.

But it's good to know that there are options like the converter, that may help ease the pain.

I think the main issue here is: review the PowerPoint Help contents. There's a fair amount of information already covered there, eh.

Absolutely - I wasn't contradicting you, just mentioning another possible
alternative. Most organizations/institutions/businesses have the converters
by this time, it's personal systems that are least likely to have them.

Also, when you save from 2008 to .doc you are basically going to encounter
the same considerations as what you describe -- you're just going through
the same converters but in the opposite direction :) As a result, any 2008
features used in the file which aren't directly supported in the older file
format will suffer the same fate.
