Can I uninstall then reinstall Office XP?

A little while ago, my primary HDD crashed, but fortunately I had a recent
back-up on an external HDD. However, I am definitely NOT technical by nature,
and so called an engineer!

He brought some software reclaiming program, and filed what he got from the
crashed disk on my secondary HDD, then installed a new primary HDD, and
loaded what he could from the reclaimed programs and data.

Unfortunately, no matter what I have tried subsequently, I cannot get
Outlook to work - error messages like 'Cannot find your personal folders',
and 'Cannot open program, try again', are driving me nuts!

Would it be safe (or possible, even), for me ti totally uninstall Office XP,
then reinstall it again from the original and SP2 disks?

I know my .pst files are safe on the external HDD, but when I have tried to
restore them, this has not helped, so my reason for wanting to try the
complete replacement of Office would be to get these files back, as there is
much data on there (due to having many files and sub-files within Outlook!).

Thanks to anyone who can offer help.

Regards,
