Can I unpublish a project?

I created a version called "What If" and saved a project as a What If
version. Then I published it so others could see it in Project Web Access.
Now I want to remove it from PWA but I don't want to delete it. Of course
nobody has posted any task updates to it, because you can only do that with
the "Published" version. Is there a way to remove its published status so it
disappears from PWA but still shows up in Project Professional? (I'm using
the 2003 version of Project Pro and Project Server.)

There is no way to "unpublish" a project. If you don't want people to see
it in PWA, you should save it as an .mpp file and then have your Project
Server administrator delete it from the database. Hope this helps.

OK. In this case I am the administrator as well, so I can just do it.

Can I import the .mpp file as a What If version of a project already
existing on the server?

Bill --

If you import the project into the Project Server database, it automatically
becomes visible in the Project Center page. If you don't want people to see
it in the Project Center, then you should not have it in the database at
all. Hope this helps.

Well, actually that's not necessarily the case. I just tried it, and here is
what I did and the result.

Actions:
1) Opened project Bogus2.WhatIf in Project Pro and saved it as an .mpp file
on my workstation.
2) Deleted project Bogus2.WhatIf and its associated Sharepoint site.
3) Imported project Bogus2.WhatIf.mpp using the import wizard. When asked
to give it a name, I chose Bogus2 and version WhatIf.
4) Saved, but did not publish, Bogus2.WhatIf.

Result:
Now the project is visible on the server in Project Pro, but is not visible
in Project Web Access.

This is what I wanted to accomplish in the first place, so it's good to know
there is a way to do it, albeit a rather complex one.
