Can I Update Linked Images All At Once?

We need .docx files so we can use Equation Editor for our software user
manuals. Our docs are 100+ pages with 2-3 linked images per page and we need
to update 75 manuals every 2-3 months. We have multiple (collaborative)
authors and we use a source control software (CVS) to manage our docs. The
paths (starting with drive letters) differ from one Office 2007 client to the
next. User A has "PathX…\*.docx\images" and User B has
"PathY…\*.docx\images". We also have to manage different versions of the same
doc in different directories. So User A has "PathX1" and "PathX2".

In Word 2003, we used Tools > Options > File Locations and set Documents and
Clipart to the local Office 2007 client. We could easily update the Red X to
match the local path by pressing F9.

In Word 2007, we use Insert>Picture>Links to File and we now get the dreaded
Red X and the error about missing/moved files. I’ve read support articles
that suggest using Prepare>Edit Links to Files and updating the links in the
Links dialog. But this dialog only lets me manually change the path for one
image at a time. Given how many images we have per doc, we don’t have time to
"convert" the paths one by one each time an author needs to edit a doc.

We cannot use the .doc format because we need the 2007 Equation Editor. We
could use the old insert IncludePicture field code, but then we can’t browse
to the image files. We have to manually type them in and always check the box
to not stor picture data in file (which everyone will forget to do).

Are there any other options we can try? I’m stunned we hit a brick wall with
linked images in Word 07. I’ve read many posts of similar confusion and there
are many tech editors like me who are lost without an easy way to update all
the images at once. Any feedback/advice is appreciated.
