Can I update Office 95 to 2003 on Windows ME?

This is probably a novice question. I have a computer that has Office 95
installed on Windows ME. When I looked at the box of Office 2003, it states
that it requires Windows 2000 or later, or XP.

I am confused about the relationship between Windows 2000 and Windows ME; is
ME considered an update of 2000?

Is Windows ME an acceptable platform for Office 2003? Or must I also
update my operating system?

Office 95 is not a qualifying product for the upgrade version of Office
2003/
Office 2003 is not compatible with Windows ME.

Windows ME is the last of the DOS based Windows Operating Systems in the
sequence Windows 9x {...98. 98SE, ME}.
Windows 2000 is in the NT based sequence of Windows Operating Systems as is
Windows XP. Windows XP is a newer Operating System than Windows 2000.

Don,

Thanks for the clarification; and that leads me to a follow-up question
prompted by the different lineage of Windows ME and Windows XP. If a buy a
Windows XP box at Costco, can I bring it home and pop it in to simply
replace/upgrade Windows ME?

If not, how would I upgrade/install XP?

You can purchase a Windows XP upgrade {either Home or Professional} to
upgrade your Windows ME. If you have the Windows ME CD, you can also do a
clean installation.

Suggest you start here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307726

and download an run one of the Upgrade Advisors to check your system first.
The Upgrade Advisor is also included on the Windows XP installation CD.

Notes:
You will likely need to upgrade the drivers for your external equipment
and perhaps your graphics and sound card. If available, the new drivers can
be downloaded from your vendor sites.
If you decide to upgrade over your current Windows ME {vice clean
install} be sure that you uninstall any current anti-virus program and
firewall prior to upgrading. You may also need newer versions of these
programs.
You may want to visit one of the Windows XP newsgroups such as
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general for additional assistance in preparing to
upgrade.
