can I use CMW on OEM office

A

AdminKen

When I try to use the CMW (or any transform for that matter) with an OEM
copy of Office 2003 Pro I get an error. "This version if Microsoft Office
2003 does not support Office Custom Maintenance Wizard files."

I have been told that this should work (see below), but it is not. I have
tried it on serveral
different systems. All latest version of ORK. All on new clean PCs. I have
tried with OEM office and with office that comes with Action Pack, both
fail. Only the MSDE or Open license version of Office 2003 seem to work.

Anyone know?!

Yes, you should be able to do that, but remember that it still needs the
original source files. You can also export a .prf file from the CMW and
invoke it with any of the other methods described in the Office REsource Kit
docs.

Hi Ken,

The custom maintenance wizard is to modify existing installations.
You can use the Office Resource Kit deployment tools with the
OEM edition basically to the extent that they apply to the
use of an LIS rather than Office Admin Point installation.

If you're deploying OEM copies you may want to look at the
System Builder tools from http://microsoft.com/oem

The action pack (partner's) subscription set are intended
basically for product evaluation and are retail copies
in their installation behavior.

AdminKen

That partly answers my question.
But can I use the ORK (Custom Installation Wizard or Custom Maintenance
Wizard) on a action pack version(retail version)? I dont think it works.

I have a mix of environments where I have a mix of OEM, Retail, Action Pack,
Open License and MSDE versions of Office 2003 Pro. I dont want to reinvent
the wheel every time. That is why I am asking.

Hi Ken,

The Action Pack copies are retail (i.e. they
don't support Office Admin Points).

If you have a volume license contact your
license specialist to acquire the Enterprise
media and see about applying the other license
types you've purchased (Action Packs aren't intended
for deployment).
