Can I use my Office 1997 with my new Windows XP HE??

Tess

I am buying a new computer with Windows XP HE because Microsoft no longer
support Windows 98. I wish to continue using my Office 97 but I have been
told by 2 retailers that I can and cannot use it?? Which is correct - I hope
it is that I can use it - I have my installation CDs and registration details.

If that version of Office came with a previous computer, then the answer is
no. If you purchased that version of Office from a software retailer, then
you can try. I honestly don't know if it will run properly tho.

Thanks JoAnn - I bought the Office from a retailer and it did not come with
the computer so I guess the answer is it MAY work. I will wait and see if
anyone else knows a definite answer. When I get the new computer it will
come with Works so I may just have to get used to that.

The best way to find out is to just install it.

The "web content" part won't work, so skip trying to install it.

The "web content" part, that is. The rest of the applications work.

I used Office 97 under WinXP HE for about two years before moving on to
Office XP and had not the slightest problem.

Bob Buckland ?:-\)

Hi Tess,

As Bob I points out there are some parts of Office 2007 that have been, by Windows XP security updates, been blocked. Basically
it's the Web Authoring Tools portions. When you install, choose a custom install option and uncheck those features.

Also, you should probably then download, save to your hard drive and install the Office 97 product and feature Service Releases and
updates from http://office.microsoft.com/downloads (Office 97 isn't 'checkable' through the automatic Office update checker at that
site).

A reason to keep a set of those updates available is that prior to Office 2000, Office used an older setup program (Acme Setup).
Acme Setup cannot reapply service updates automatically when you reinstall or change the installed feature set of Office 97, they
need to be reapplied each time that occurs.

=============

Thanks for your input - nice to know someone was able to use the Office 97 with Windows XP. >>
