Can I use Office Home & Student edition?

A

Anton Lebedev

Hi!

I would be quite thankful to anyone who will tell me, where I can get an
authorized anwer from Microsoft concerning my situation.

I have decided to buy Student & Home edition (as the open software that I
use now has compatibility problems - the fonts in the slides are unstable). I
work as a lecturer in the state university and the price looks much more
attractive than either of the business versions. However, the box says H&O
can not be used in state institutions (and my University is the State
University of St.Petersburg, Russia) and for commercial purposes (and I
actually will use it to create PowerPoint lectures for my students, and,
naturally, as a lecturer I would get paid for my lectures). I need to know,
whether I can buy and install H&O to my personal home computer and use it for
above purposes. Otherwise I have no choice but to convert back to Open office.

Regards,
Anton Lebedev

Does your university have academic volumes of Microsoft Office for sale? From what you have said about your potential usage for Home and Student edition, no, you would not be able to prepare for your lectures, etc. since this would be commercial use.

Well, we do not have anything of the kind at our University. The University
just has legal agreement with Microsoft (the details I do not know, but the
software on the computers at the University is mostly legal). As to the
software the teachers use on their personal computers - no one cares in
Russia, I think, and thus it it unusual to ask for funding from my dean.

OK, than the next question: I have been using the trial version of MSO
installed on my new laptop for 1 month for the said purposes (preparing
lectures). Do I have to delete it immediately or can I use it until the trial
period expires? Shall Microsoft lay any claims on me for this 1 month illegal
use? In my defence I can only tell, that I have been misinformed at the
computer store (they have said, this home version is only limited to three
computers, but I can legally use it at home for any purpose).

Just a comment;
The MS office H&S site has links for 'resources for teachers &
Administartors' reccomending methods of using H&E in their work.
Since all teachers are paid the fact that the OP is also being paid for
tutoring doesnt IMO render the useage as commercial, in the commonly
excepted meaning.

To the OP, you also qualify for academic pricing so visit your local MS
site. (I dont suppose Amazon.com has invaded Russia :) )

No MS is not going to attempt 'rendition' to extract you to the US

Well, I have had the same way of thinking - because (as the shop assistant
has told me) previously they have had MSO in "Student & Teacher edition".
However I have decided to contact Microsoft directly - as salespeople are not
that experienced in the field.

Concerning the Amazon: in Russia one can buy from Amazon.de, .com, or co.us.
One only needs a seller who is ready to ship to Russia and a valid
non-electron VISA or other major credit card. Are there any special offers
from Amazon?

And I found reading numerous Microsoft webpages useless - surfing so far, I
still could not get plain answer ("NO") - as I have received here (or @YES@ -
as I have hoped =) I guess, if it all would be clear stated on the box, than
the public would understand that buying Office Home is next to waste of
money. Now I understand that only standard version can be used in reality.

No rendition necessary - Microsoft can snatch me easily next time when I'm
sent abroad to a conference =) Unfortunately I do not see any academic
pricing offer on www.Microsoft.ru. And - I repeat - in the local store I was
told, that I can use H&S at home like normal, and only the number of licences
differ (max 3 for H&S and greater numbers for Business). I did not believe
it, because the box said "no commercial use, no use in the state
organisations", and so I have decided to ask someone at Microsoft directly.
But Microsoft helpdesk did not reply to my email - and I have started to ask
questions here.

You need to note that the EULA has different meanings in different countries
The MS EULA is us specific and as such not legally valid in some countries
Academic versions can be purchased, legally, by anyone in the UK, as to
whether the individual meets the licence terms is a different matter
H&S when used by a tutor/teacher does not constitute commercial use.
This should not be taken as a rant against MS
