Can I use Visio 2003 stencils in Visio 2000?

David

I have Visio 2003 on my office (company) notebook, and have Visio 2000 on my
home (personal) computer (separate licenses, and no plans to upgrade Visio
2000)

I need to create a diagram with electronics shapes on my Visio 2000 (home)
computer, but Visio 2000 doesn't seem to have electronics shapes (unless
they're available for download?).

Can I use the electronics shapes from Visio 2003 in Visio 2000?

Thanks,

D

The file format for Visio 2003 is different from Visio 2002 to support new
features. The electronic shapes have been around for a while and I doubt
they were affected by the new features. So it should be able to save a Visio
2003 drawing in Visio 2002 format. The Visio 2002 format is the same format
as used by Visio 2000.

If you do have the Microsoft version of Visio 2000 (also known as Visio 2000
SR1), that is the oldest version of Visio that qualifies for an upgrade to
the latest version of Visio, Visio 2003. When Visio 2007 is released, this
may change and you may no longer qualifiy for an upgrade.

Yes, I knew about the difference in format of the Visio "drawing" (.vsd)
files.

But that wasn't my question...

I want to be able to use the 2003 shapes (stencil files) in Visio 2000.

Or, are you saying that I could embed all the electronic shapes in a Visio
2003 .vsd file, save it as 2002 format and then open it with 2000?

Yes it probably would work.

Even though Visio has several file extensions, for any given version, Visio
has only one file format. The file extension tells Visio how to open the
file. So changing a Visio file with an extension of vsd to an extension of
vss will change it to a stencil.
