Can IP have it's data self contained? VERY new Infopath user

Hi

I have JUST created my first IP form. This was a "rush job" for a demo of
"data entry" type forms.

The form in question, created initially in word 2007, contains a 6 x 48
table. Basically this form requires the ability for the user to select a
date from a DatePicker in each of two "fields", a third field is required
to store limited textual data, max of 200 chars max and usually much less
than that ~50-60.

There is also a possibility that another field requires a drop down list
of maybe 10 items. The drop down choices for this field (in each row)
would contain different items. Therefore the total number of items from
which to choose could be as many as 480, though this maximum is unlikely
to be reached in most instances.

All of this is a precursor to the following questions ...

Can all of this data be self contained in a "master" form (or whatever it
may be called?), from which the new updateable form can be created for
editing by the user?

Can this form be created and used without having to use any kind of
database, or other backend processing?

I am assuming that each user would have to have Infopath or some
derivative to make the form "interactive"

The essence of what is required in my clients need is an "interactive"
form from which (on each row) they can choose an item from a drop down
list, select a date in each of two fields (in each row) and add
(potentially re-edit) a comment or small amount of text.

The princple is to transfer the use of paper based forms (on which of
course the users write) to an electronic form. Initially the change to the
electronic base is the forerunner to additional forms/changes in the
future.

At THIS TIME though, there is no need to capture or otherwise process the
data entered by the user. At the very most, the form may need to be either
printed, emailed or both.

Thank you for any help, I hope you can understand what I mean.

Kind regards

Peter

Hello

Yes you can have the self contained Forms , but take care that the perf of
form is not slow. You can build Browser enabled forms in 2007 so that the
users who doesnt have Infopath can open and fill out.

Great.

Ok. :)

Being SO new to IP the learning curve is vertical at the moment :)

If a browser based form is NOT used, what does the user need to have on
his/her pc to enable the data entry on an IP form. Remembering that there
is no need for any other interaction other than potential emailing or
printing of the form.
You can build Browser enabled forms in 2007 so that the
users who doesnt have Infopath can open and fill out.

If I DO choose to use a browser based form, which at this point seems to
be the best approach, I presume I could then use bookmarks/urls to "point"
to the approriate forms from which the user can select.

Ahh? a thought has just occured to me. Could I "somehow" utilise MS
Outlook to select a form for data entry? Actually make it almost *LOOK*
like the IP forms are part of Outlook?

The users in may case are going to be using tablet pcs and outlook will
have a major role to play, contacts, todo, calendar etc. It could prove
VERY beneficial to be able to "stick to" the one application (Outlook) and
be able to swap and change as required between contacts, todo, calendar
*AND Infopath FORMS*.

DO you think such an Outlook approach is feasible/doable with relative
ease? If so a pointer or two in the right direction would be very much
appreciated :) :)

Thank you for any assistance you can offer.

I think it is going to be difficult to have one master form which moves
whithin email since you have very little control of the process to know whom
has the latest version. Typically you need a database on the backend to
provide the structure and manage its flow. You can integrate with Outlook
and leverage it for interaction. The trick is you need off-line capabilities
for the tablet users. This can be done in a couple ways.

I would suggest you look at the Database Accelerator at
http://www.qdabra.com as it has been used for similar projects.
