Format>Style>Modify style...
There are three "spacings" affecting "line spacing" --
1) Paragraph>Line Height (should always be 'single')
2) Paragraph>Space before (should normally be 0, except for Headings)
3) Paragraph>Space After (should normally be the same as the font height,
except for Normal style).
All text in Word is formatted with styles. (Seriously! Even if you think
you are applying direct formatting -- Word converts it into a style behind
the scenes -- so you might as well give it a name so you can find it again!)
The first hint is "Don't use "Normal" style for ANYTHING. Leave that one
for Word, it uses it for all sorts of things, such as the row height in
tables and various graphics functions.
There are built-in formatting styles for various parts of a document, but
you will not see them unless they have been already used in a document,
unless you enable "All styles" in the Formatting Palette.
Word 2008 seems to be missing some of the usual ones, which will spring back
into life if you create them. For a letter, you would expect:
Inside Address
Recipient Address
Salutation
Heading
Body Text
Signature
To Address
From Address
Header
Footer
Page number
Spend a moment to get those set up to your liking, then save the result as a
Template. Any time you want a new letter, double-click it
You will never have to think about "formatting" again
Three very useful maxims when working with computers:
1) If it's not easy, you're doing it wrong
2) Make the COMPUTER do the work.
3) If you will do it more than once a year, spend the time to do the whole
job properly the first time, then you will never have to work it out again.
Oh: And one more -- There are no stupid questions, only people too silly to
ask
Hope this helps
Where is the "Modify Style". Whenever I type a letter only the address and
salutation are double spaced - when I check line spacing it already says
single so I can't change it. The body of the letter is single spacing.
