Can no longer hide rows

I have a list in List Manager with all the bells & whistles visuals,
autofilters, total row. I used to be able to hide specific rows (for
printing purposes), now it won't let me. It says "cannot shift objects
off sheet." I have no clue what that is referring to. I'm doing things
the same way I always have, and I have not made any changes to the
spreadsheet except to add some more data to it, like normal.

Any ideas what I can do to fix this? And how to prevent it from
happening again in the future?

TIA!

Ok, this is strange. I tried all kinds of things, including closing the
doc and reopening it, and nothing changed this error from happening.

Then, it just went away. It's now hiding rows just fine. Gotta love a
reliable app :-\

Exactly what did you do that's different from last time when it wasn't
working for you?

I wish I knew! I tried my best to recall what I did just prior to when
it started working, and honestly I couldn't figure it out. I was just
turning various autofilters on and off, hiding and showing columns,
etc. I had done all of those things previously and it didn't fix the
problem with hiding rows, but at some point in doing the same thing, it
did.

In fact, the problem existed with "show all" selected, on more than one
occasion, then when it had fixed itself, it was also under a "show all"
condition. Baffling.

You probably have a name or reference referring to a "stray" cell. Or, you
may have entered some data into a cell (even a blank character) that's near
the edge of the worksheet. Try Pressing control-end, or
Edit-Goto-Special-lastcell. If this cell is below and to the left of where
you think the last cell should be, then delete all rows below your data, and
all columns to the right of your data. Then SAVE AND CLOSE the workbook.
When you reopen it it should work properly.

Thanks, Bob. I tried this and it unfortunately *is* the correct cell:
the very bottom-rightmost cell in my list.

Just for kicks, I tried deleting the rows below the list anyway, and
that didn't do anything--the thousands of rows are still under my list.
In fact, the option in the edit menu, after having selected all those
rows, was simply "Delete," not "Delete Row" as I would normally expect.

Another screwball thing it is doing at the moment is that it won't let
me delete a column, either within the list or outside it. This is true
of this spreadsheet and a couple others that I have list manager running
in. I know it's allowed that in the past.

So my ability to hide rows, and delete columns, appears to be completely
unreliable...

BTW, I posted that last reply from a different computer, hence the
different name. Thought it might look odd without clarifying :)

I just realized that I could select a column and press the Delete *key*
to delete itn. On any other spreadsheet without a list in it, I can
select Edit | Delete from the menu, but while I'm working on these ones
with lists in them, the menu command is greyed out (and says "Delete
Row"...presumably because that was the last command I had used).

Excel is really keeping me on my toes ;)

I suspect it DID, actually, do something.

Firstly, if the entire row is selected, then you don't need "delete
row", just "delete", as the selection defines the row.

Secondly, when rows are deleted, the entire spreadsheet below the
deletion moves up and the same number of new rows are added at the
bottom of the sheet, so deleted rows are replaced by the same number of
rows from below the selection. If you delete "blank" rows (rows that
look blank, even if there is some invisible content) and they are
replaced by blank rows, it will look like nothing has happened. The
same number of rows remain selected.
