Can no longer save due to permission error

I am running OS X 10.2.8 and Word 2001 in the classic environment.
All of a sudden now, I get an error after I open a file and attmept to
save it. The office assistant tells me I do not have permission
enough to save the file. Everything worked great for some time. But
now if I try to save and it tells me I don't have enough permission,
and then I try to go around it and save as and rename the file, it
makes both files vanish. I have checked the permiussions in OS X and
they seem to be correct.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

they seem to be correct.

I would try the repair permissions option instead and see if it helps.
Couldn't hurt, at any rate.

Tried the repairing permissions to no avail, but here is a weird
update. On the suggestion of someone, I turned off the option to
allow "fast saves" and this seems to have corrected the problem for
now. What exactly does that do and why would it be a problem?
