Can No Longer Select Contacts OL2003 from WD2002

After upgrading from Outlook 2002 to Outlook 2003, I can
no longer select contacts from the mail merge wizard in
Word 2002 (I only upgraded Outlook; not Office from 2002
to 2003).

In step 3, I choose "Select from Outlook contacts"; click
on "Choose Contacts folder", then select a profile (the
default "Outlook") and I get the following error:

"Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Any ideas?

Word 2002 SP2

Of course.
Versions must match.
Who advised you to update only one component of Office? That's never a good
idea.

Russ,
I am using a hosted Exchange service (ASP) that went to
Exchange Server 2003 and provides Outlook as part of
their offering.
I am disappointed, but not surprised, that MS would
require an upgrade of Office in order for the indivivual
components to inter-operate with each other.
It appears that now I must decide which I need more; the
new features in Outlook 2003 or my mail merge to work.
Based on reviews of Office 2003, most reviewers felt the
cost of upgrading the entire Office suite was not worth
the cost and many recommend upgrading just Outlook. Of
course, they were not looking for specific parts like
mail merge in Word and contacts in Outlook to still work.
Too bad. Thanks for the reply.

I, too, wish Microsoft would document that fact clearly. If they make
Outlook 2003 available as a standalone upgrade, they should at least spell
out the consequences of upgrading only that one component.

Just in case it helps anyone else, I found a work-around
solution by exporting the contacts in Outlook 2003 to
Excel 2002 and using that as the mail merge source in
Word 2002. I can mail merge via Fax (using WinFaxPro) and
email in plain text, via attachement, but not using HTML
(?). Well that's a problem for another day.
