Can not change date format

I am running a simple mail merge from Excel to Word 2003. After merging the documents I find that word has changed the date format from 20 February 2004 to 2/20/04 ( back to front in Australia) and very confusing to my clients. However I can not change the format back to how I would like it in the master document. I have changed the language default in both programs & in Control panel. I have deleted the field and re-inserted it, with no effect. Help.

In this case use {Mergefield datefieldname \@ "d MMMM yyyy"}
