Can not close Master Access 2000 MDB

I use replication and when I make a change to the master
database I get a message that it can not compact the
database and will save the changes to a new database
(DB1). It does not always do this, just some of the times
I close the master. This is frustrating because I
frequently can not save changes to my Master. Does anyone
know what I may be doing to cause this?
