hi

in ms word 2000 i'm trying to disable word wrap by checking/unchecking
tools/options/generel/word wrap, it doesn't seem to do anything. Is
there anything else i can try?

I see no such setting in 2000. I do not believe you can disable wordwrap.
Max paper width is 23", what would happen when you got to the end of it?

There is a Wrap to Window setting in Tools - Options - View. That setting
affects only the way text displays in Normal view. When selected, it makes
text wrap to fit the current window. This keeps you from having to scroll
horizontally if text is zoomed larger than would otherwise fit in the
display.

To save files without word wrap, choose File - Save As and set Save as type
to Text with Layout.
