Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

When I click the download button on AutoUpdate I get the message "The connection to the update server was interrupted." I have been getting this messeage for over a month. When I use the browser and go directly to the Microsoft download page I get the "Can't find server message". I tried both Safari and Foxfire.

I am using Mac OS 10.5 on an Intel iMac.

Thanks for any help.

Hi John!

This has become a common problem lately in the past several months and
is out of Microsoft's control.

Your ISP's DNS servers, which resolve server names to IP addresses so
that your machine can connect, have given your Mac some bad information.

First, try clearing your computer's DNS cache. It's quick and causes no
harm:

1. Open the Terminal application found in /Applications/Utilities.
2. Enter this command followed by a return:

dscacheutil -flushcache (for Leopard)
lookupd -flushcache (for Tiger)

3. Try your download again. Your machine should have to query your DNS
servers again for an address.

If the above doesn't work then your ISP's DNS servers are still causing
you a problem. Look into using <http://www.opendns.org/> to substitute
your ISP's DNS server addresses with this service's DNS servers. It's
also very simple and will very probably allow you to download your
updates. You may need to run the above Terminal command again after
changing your DNS servers.

You might also consider just using these new DNS server addresses
permanently. See if your speed accessing websites improves and note
whether or not you have fewer or more problems connecting to sites.

Bill and Diane,
I tried the cache flush command and it did not fix the problem. Next I went to OpenDNS and changed the DNS addresses but it still did not fix the problem on the iMac, even after restarting. I was able to download the office updates using the laptop so I can update office ok. But the iMac still has the problem. All other aspects of the internet and my home network work fine.

Thank you for the suggestions. I plan to work a little more with the OpenDNS site and see if I can figure anything out.

Is the iMac an older computer? As I described in the blog article, the
problem seems to be tied to older computers.

I would test downloading in a new User to eliminate any corruption in your
User's folder.

Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the
New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Test downloading
without making any changes. If it fails, try the OpenDNS settings.

This has been an extremely frustrating problem for some users. Makes you
want to throw the computer out the window. :)

Same as you. I have an old iMac & a 2 yr. old MacBook, both with Leopard
10.5. Tho I supposedly have the Microsoft "auto update" feature selected on
both, it seemed to ignore my MacBook - my last version had been 11.2, so I
updated Office to 11.5.1 there with no problem. The only way I could do the
same for the older iMac was by sending the Office file from MacBook to iMac
via filesharing between both ... so easy! If you don't have the luxury of 2
computers linked by filesharing, possibly you can download or copy the file
or application by some other means, & then download it to your iMac ???
Sorry, I don't have enough of a technological background to suggest anything
else.
