Can not edit Chart Object in Powerpoint 2003

OS: Windows XP SP2
Microsoft Office Powerpoint 2003 (11.6361.1.6360) SP1

Have problem editing chart in Powerpoint. Get error:
Microsoft Office PowerPoint can't start the application required to open
this object. An error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning
properly. Would you like to repair this feature now?

Then I get progress dialog:
Installing: Application server

Ends up in eror message:
The server application, source file, or item can't be found, or returned an
unknown error. You may need to reinstall the server application.

Tried:
- Reinstalling Office several times.
- All suggestions here: http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00236.htm
- I am not running Norton, so the Norton stuff does not applies
here.

This error even occurs if I create a new *.ppt and do Insert->Chart... save
the ppt and then try to open it and edit the Chart Object.

This really get me confused, I presuate suggestions.

you try reregistering MS Graph?

Also, you might want to try searching for officeav.dll and doing the
regsvr32 /u "\officeav.dll" thing as described in that FAQ. Even if you
don't have Norton installed now, it's possible that it was at one time, and
that DLL is causing problems. At any rate, it won't hurt to try.

You might also want to try running a Detect and Repair from PPT's Help menu.
It works differently than a reinstall, and it may help.

No it is not possible that it has been Norton on that computer.

I have tried a detect and repair.

Nothing helped.

Do you have any antivirus programs running...is it norton?
Was office2003/powerpoint 2003 installed from a network drive?
Was an antivirus program running while Office 2003 installed?

If you don't know contact your tech support guys and have them do a local
install..
If you have the Office 2003/PPT2003 CD uninstall Powerpoint 2003/Office 2003
from add remove programs and do a Custom installation, whe you get the
options select all the components (Run all from My computer)
Note ... if you use Outlook you may want to use the save my settings wizard.

I have contacted Microsoft Support, and they could not provide any solution.

I have 35 computers where I have installed Office 2003 with policy in AD.

It may have to do with the policy settings, then. I know that Org Chart, for
instance, needs read/write (but not delete) permissions on some files in
order to work properly.

I wonder if your antivirus program has some kind of checking similar to
Norton's Office plug-in? Have you tried disabling the antivirus as a test?
You might also try logging in as administrator and see if you get the same
problem. If not, it's probably back to a permissions/policy issue.

Can you be more spesific on wich files that needs special permission? Is it
Office files? Then I can reset det the permissions on the Office folders.

My Virus Program (F-secure) do not have a similar checking as Norton.

Most of my clients is working just fine. My situation is that I have a base
installation for the clients, office an F-secure included. And then different
software on top. I have started the prosess puttting on and taking off the
additional software, but still no result. I hoped I could get some help here
from other users experience.

Because of this Norton thing the first appication I looked at was Adobe
Acrobat Standard 6. Adobe put in a toolbar in office. I have tried to
uninstall it but no result.

All my users is administrator for his own computer, saves me a lot of work.

Well, since your users are administrators on their systems, I doubt that
it's a permissions thing. Unfortunately, I don't know what exact files would
need permissions for MS Graph, so I won't be any help there anyway. After
reading your latest information, I don't think that will be the issue,
though.

The only thing I know to suggest is to disable F-Secure and see if that
takes care of the problem. I searched the archives of this newsgroup for
F-secure, and I saw one post from about 3 years ago where a user had to
remove F-Secure from his system because it was causing extreme slowness when
opening PPT files. That was a *long* time ago, though, and I haven't seen
any mention of problems with F-secure and PPT before or since then.

I'm sorry, I don't have any other suggestions. I see you mentioned that
you've called MS support. They couldn't come up with anything, either?
