Can not maintain links

Using Access 2000, I can not maintain the link from the front end to the
back end. Upon opening the front I get an error that the Jet Database
engine can not open the file. If I go to links manager and re-establish the
link to the back end the database works fine however if I shut down the
Access and then start it up again I get the same error message and have to
run the links manager again. etc etc etc. Any ideas? I know that the
versions of Access are current and the same as are the versions of
msjet40.dll
