can not open a word 2002 file get a hungapp message

My Word 2002 and Frontpage 2003 have worked well until this week. I down
loaded some MS Windows updates. This may not be the proble. Now when I
start up either word or FP 2003 and click on open and select a file name to
open it will not open the file and the cursor hour clock will just process
and never open. I get "hungapp" errors that get reported to MS error
reporting.

I also have typed in a letter and used mail merge and proceeded with the
step (1-6) and if I try to select a different database that the one
associated originally with the file or new to the file, I can not open the
file. I have run MS beta spyware defender and I am using Norton Internet
Security2006 and I faithfully update the definitions sometimes three times a
week. I have looked at hits on google searching for hungapp and see little
to help me.

PLease Help.........I need to get out a large mass mailing of 1200 items.
