correct the problem described in this article. Only apply it to systems
that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive
additional testing to further ensure product quality. Therefore, if you are
not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait
for the next Office XP Service Pack that contains this fix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support
Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product

If you have Norton AV then this is the primary cause of the inability
to open previously saved documents. In Norton AV go to Options and in
the Miscellaneous section turn off "Enable Office Plug-in".

Does anyone know what the root cause for this is? We are experiencing this
in my workplace. We use Symantec AV, but it does not have an Office Plug-in.
Thanks!

Here's Beth's standard reply:

If Norton AV was installed at one time then the DLL for the Office
Plug-in could still be registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. It does
not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional
details on the unregister command if you need them:
