Can not open Excel 2002 with Excel 2003

I just got a new dell machine running WindowsXP Office
2003 When I try to access a machine on my network running
Windows98 and Office2002 I get a blank excel screen the
document never opens. If I copy and paste the spreadsheet
to the XP machine I can open the document fine.

Any idea why or what I can do to fix this??
