can not start media player, word, excel, outlook ... anymore.

Hi all,

I have a strange problem. Since a few days I can not start anymore some
microsoft programs, that is outlook, word, excel, media player possibly
more. When I try to start I always get a message like:

"Microsoft Office Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience. ..."

In the case of outlook I get the message "The operating system is not
presently configured to run this application" before the one above.

There is not much I have changed since everything was working. I
remember that I updated McAfee, Kerio Personal Firewall and maybe there
were some MS updates as well.

The system is a Windows XP Pro and Office 2003 all updated plus up to
date McAfee and firewall.

I already checked for worms with the newest stinger .. nothing.
I also renamed the normal.dot to normal.old .. nothing.

Any ideas?
I would really appreciate any help!

Are you sure you didn't add a rule to your firewall that is causing
the problem? It's possible you blocked a file that is shared by these
applications and it preventing them from running correctly.

I tried with the firewall and mcafee disabled. wmplayer and the office
apps still crash when starting, same error msg.

ok problem solved.

kerio personal firewall caused the problem (or to be more precise the
updated version 4.2).

a system restore to a date before I updated kerio makes everything work
again. Then just to check I updated again having the same problems.

No idea what is wrong with kerio 4.2 but apparently there seems to be
a little problem.

Why would we? Kerio Personal Firewall is neither an Office Product or a
Microsoft product.
