Can not update Office basic edition 2003

Computer: Dell 4700c XP Home Office Basic Edition 2003
Unable to run Detect and Repair Errors or Reinstall the program. Starts the
process and quits. Error message cites two temp. files. Send message to MS.

When I attempt to update the program, it asks for Office Prof. XP which I do
not have. I have Office Basic Edition 2003.

My reason for wanting to either repair or reinstall are problems I am having
with Outlook and Word. The Outlook problem is that when a long message is
opened and you attempt to scroll, the new symbols are created rather than
moved, making the e-mail unreadable.

As for Word, although it is useable, the margins are not present on the
screen. I.E. text goes to edges. Prints correctly, but is not displayed
correctly on monitor.

Bottom line is: I can't update, I can't repair the problem, and I can't
reinstall.

Hi, legrec,

Did you have Office XP, or an Office 2002 program such as Word or FrontPage?
If so, the updater is trying to update that application as well.

You can look in Windows Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs application to
see what Office family of programs are installed. Uninstall them if you no
longer need them.

This may provide more info:

If the problem is occurring in Windows applications other than Office (such
as IE), then it may not be related to Office and may be related to Windows
or a Windows component such as a printer driver.

You might want to repair your Windows installation, as well, to be sure.

Have not fully resolved the problem.
I reviewed add/remove and found the following:
MS Office Basic Edition 2003 No file size given
MS Office Power Point Viewer 2003 Size: 4.01 MB
MS Office XP Pro Size: 283.0 MB

When I attempt to update Office XP SP3, I get the message it is looking for
MS Office XP Professional.

When I open my programs, (Word, Excel, Outlook) and look to see what version
I am using, it show MS Office Basic Edition 2003. When I run my MS Office
Basic Edition 2003 CD to detect and repair/reinstall, it will not let me do
it, as it looks for MS Office XP Pro.

You indicate I should remove programs I am not using. Well, I am using
Word, Excel, and Outlook.

What do I try next?

Thanks for the further details. It sounds like your Windows registry may be
a bit confused about what is installed. Remove Office Pro 2003, re-install
Office Basic 2003 with your CD and try the update again.

If Office 2003 components are being updated, you may need your Office CD.
If Office XP components are being updated, you may need your Office XP CD.

If your system was installed by an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) or
if you have installed trial or other multiple versions of Office, this can
happen.
