can' open file

Hi,

I am working in Office 2000 (SP3) on XP. I have a file created in Office 97.
When I try and open it i get the message excell must close, has encountered a
problem blah blah. I once tried to open it and it said unable to read. Is it
corrupted? If it is can I correct it?? thanks any help much appreciated
