Can Project 2003 import pre-Project 98

I have several very old project files, possible from a version earlier than
Project 97 and definitely older than Project 98.

Is there a way to convert these files to be read by Project 2003?

Not directly. If you can get a copy of project 98 you can open them with
that, save and then read from 2003.

If they are that old, you might not really find them very useful...
