Can receive mail but not send with Entourage

I am running Entourage 2001 on a Mac, and I can send mail out, but
when I click the 'send/receive' refresh button on the toolbar, the
program freezes....
I am unable to perform a force quit, so I have to restart my machine.
Any ideas? I am not getting any error messages....the symbol in the
lower right corner that spins to indicate progress simply stops.
