Can someone help me recover this corrupted document?

Hello,
I composed a Word document on my iBook before I reinitialised my hard
disk, and now, when I try to open the document, it doesn't open and
Word suggests a list of file translators.
All of the file translators show my document as gibberish.
How does one recover such a file that seems corrupted?
Thanks,
Jonathan Majewski

Jonathan,

Try File menu -> Open -> Against "Show", pop down to "Recover text from any
file" then navigate to this document.

If that works, reset the pop-down menu to show the usual format of documents
you open, because it's a "sticky" menu setting and can cause alarm much
later when you try to open another document and you see some strange
characters.

If that doesn't work, post back -- some of the other people here will be
able to walk you through other options.

* If anyone is still reading down this far, here's a question: is it time
for you to back up your Normal template and all your Word settings files?
(This should be on a medium other than the internal hard drive and, if you
also want to protect against theft and fire, stored in a different
building.)
