can syncing with my phone erase contacts on the phone?

I synced up with my laptop and htc windows phone for the first time last
night and important recent phone numbers are missing from the phone.
Previous windows sync software used to ask questions when there was a doubt
as to which contacts were to be kept. I cant have assumed the most recent
set was on the laptop and erased the contacts on my phone, ...can it?

You never assume anything about a sync and always make a backup of your data
before you attempt one because the changes they make are permanent.
Specific questions about syncing are not Outlook questions and belong in a
forum that supports your sync software.
