can track changes be removed?

I have a document (calendar for shared vehicle) that I foolishly shared
with others, and now it look like a ransom note. One of the biggest problems
is someone turned on that horror of horrors, Track Changes. Of course,
there is no "Stop Tracking" option. I did a couple of Google searches but
none of the solutions worked. One suggested "Accept all changes" from the
Tracking toolbar, but mine doesn't have that button. Another suggested
going through and accepting each change in turn, which I tried, but the
"Accept Change" button is grayed out for most of them. And, of course, you
can't just select and delete them. I also tried selecting the entire
document and clicking on Accept all changes.

I'm using Word 2000. Any suggestions?

Display the Reviewing toolbar. Turn off Track Changes and Accept All Changes
in Document (if Word 2000 has this option, it will be where it is in later
versions, on the menu opened by clicking the arrow beside Accept Change).

Thanks for the reply.

As I said in my most, there is no "Turn off Track Changes". If that were
there, I would have done so, though it still wouldn't help with removing
the old ones.

Also, as I said in my post, there is no "Accept All Changes" in this
version. As far as being there in future version, since I don't have a
future version, this isn't much help.

May I suggest that in future replies to my, or even other's, queries, you
read the entire post, not just the subject line? Might help you to give
relevant replies, instead of just suggesting things that have already been
tried unsuccessfully.

I did read your entire post, but you said you didn't have a "Tracking"
toolbar, so I was hoping you did have the Reviewing toolbar. According to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326528, Word 2000 does in fact have the
Reviewing toolbar. You should be able to right-click on any toolbar or the
menu bar to get the toolbar menu and click on it to display it.

You should also be able to turn Track Changes off and on by double-clicking
TRK in the status bar or by pressing Ctrl+Shift+E; the current status of the
setting will be reflected in the status bar either way.

As for accepting all the changes in the document, I can't help thinking
there must be some way to do that in Word 2000. According to
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/sharing/howtrackchangesworks.html#HowToRemoveTrackedChanges,
if you use Tools | Track Changes | Accept or Reject Changes, you can choose
to accept all the changes in the document.

If you are unable to do any of these things, perhaps the document is
protected against editing of the changes? If so, you might see whether
Unprotect Document is on the Tools menu.

Well it was certainly there in previous versions, though Microsoft do seem to
like to call it different things in different versions, so you have to waste a
lot of time looking for stuff when you upgrade. It is normally called "red
lining" but Microsoft decided to call it "track changes" in some versions and
"revision marking" in others, and possibly a few other things as well.

But if you click on a blank space in the menu bar you will get a list of
toolbars you can use. One of them will be the one you need, and in Word 97
(earlier than yours) it's called "reviewing". Make sure it's ticked, and then
you get the toolbar where you can accept or reject any or all changes.

Read again. I didn't say I didn't have a tracking toolbar, but that I
didn't have an "Accept All Changes" button.

There was no option to "Accept all changes" either in the menus or the
toolbr. I know, this mystifies me too.

Unprotect Document is on the Tools menu.

The document is not protected. As I said in my original post, all these
problems started occurring after I turned protection off and allowed others
access to the document.

In any case, I fixed it. I copied the entire calendar into another file,
and all the tracking crap went away.

Thanks for your efforts.

Thanks for your reply. As I stated in my original post, I had the toolbar,
whatever it's called this week, but there was no "Accept all changes"
button, and I tried accepting them one by one, but it only worked on some
of them. Others were somehow frozen. I finally copied the entire document
into a new document and fixed the problems, at least until some idiot who
doesn't know a mouse from a milk carton goes in and turns on Track Changes
again.

Thanks for your reply.
