Can we have some Office 2007 for mac screenshots ?

No, you can't. :)

What would screenshots really do for you? Even the WinOffice screenshots
were released with the caveat that this wasn't what it would really look
like, as I think they finalize the cosmetics towards the end. WinOffice
didn't finalize the UI until after their Beta 1, either, and may still not
have finalized it.

MacOffice can't be finalized until WinOffice 2007 is final. They have
released some information about it, though. XML file format, no VBA, seem
to be the major things. I'm guessing it will be called Office 2008, by the
way, since Mac and Win versions have customarily used different year
numbers. Let's hope it isn't Office 2009.

I'm curious--why are you on tenterhooks for the next version? :)

So that we can get some Universal Binary applications. To be blunt
honest, MS Office 2004 is all PPC. Is it possible to install WinOffice
2007 on XP on MacBook?

M

Michel Bintener

True enough, many Intel Mac users are waiting for a universal binary release
of Office, but that's not really related to actual screenshots of Office 12.
It is possible to install Office 2007 on an XP partition on any Intel Mac,
or even in an XP environment in VM ware such as Parallels; however, a study
by Mactech has shown that Office 2004 runs quite well on Intel Macs (through
the Rosetta emulation layer), even outperforming Office on PowerPC
configurations in some instances. So if your question relates to the mere
usability of Office on an Intel Mac, don't worry, you will not have to
install WinOffice and Windows XP/Vista unless you really want to. Here's the
link to the study mentioned above:

No disrespect intended, but keep in mind that "Office 2007" is still only
available as a Beta [read as: BUGGY] release. If you're just looking to
experiment with it out of curiosity or have some sort of development/testing
project in mind that's one thing, but I certainly wouldn't rely on a Beta
version of *any* software for serious use of the application.

While a "Beta [read as: BUGGY]" may be just that, it may be interesting
to see some details about what the next version of Office for Mac will
be like. Will it, for example, have the Ribbon, or a Ribbon type,
interface like Office 2007 for Windows?

Also, for us interested techies, will there be a public beta for us to
try out and help the developers work out bugs, much like has been done
with Office 2007? I'm sure most people who seriously consider using a
beta version realise it may not be stable for day-to-day running, but
could be interesting none-the-less.

Certainly, there is *no* information regarding the next version on the
Mactopia website. Meanwhile, Microsoft have been promoting Office 2007
for many months, nearing a year now.

No, there is no information - aside from the facts that it will be a
Universal Binary, will incorporate the new Office file formats, and won't
have VBA - or screenshots as yet. This should not be any surprise, since
Office Mac releases are generally one year later than Office Windows
releases. This time, given the need to port the whole development process
over to Xcode in order to make the Universal Binaries, all the work on the
file formats, plus whatever they decide to do about the UI, I wouldn't be
surprised if it's later than that.

So far, there has never been a public beta for Office Mac. So you're
unlikely to get one this time. Usually there's some sort information given
out at Macworld San Francisco in January and then some more a few months
before release (around the time when they announce the release). I wouldn't
expect much information for another year or so.

No doubt the reply will be in line with the previous, but if you don't
ask, you'll never know...

Does MacBU have any intention, or are you even considering,
implementing the OpenDocument XML file format, which Microsoft has
reluctantly decided to add to Office 2007 as an add-in (instead of as a
new, possibly default, format as would be preferable for the world and
its sanity)?

Such a move would seem sensible, what with several governments already
recommending the format as preferable to any other for working and
distribution, as it is now an ISO standard (from what I recall).

Hi Alex -

Not picking on you so please don't take this personally, but your post just
provided me with the opportunity to vent myself a little :)

1- re: or are you even considering

Who is "you"? NONE who actively participate in the newsgroups are MS
employees, let alone a part of MacBU. There are MS & MacBU folks who monitor
the groups & will *occasionally* respond on specific issues. Even so, they
are not here to provide an _inside track_ on MS business plans - at least
not if they plan on keeping their jobs & avoid lawsuits for violation of
non-disclosure agreements.

2- *Nothing* said or written by *anyone* in *anything* other than a public
release from MS is worth a tinker's damn, and what MS plans to do/not do in
future releases won't be known until after it's done. Anyone with
suggestions or requests would do better to submit them directly to MS rather
than posting in newsgroups in the hope that their concerns will be heard by
the actual decision makers. One direction among others is:

http://www.microsoft.com/usability/enroll.mspx

3- The newsgroups exist primarily to assist users of *current* product, not
as an exercise in wishful thinking or speculation about what may or may not
happen ~2 years from now.

To paraphrase the redoubtable MVP John McGhie - Those who would know can't
say & those who would say can't know.

Hey Tchewy. I have no idea if anyone actually answered your question or not.
Anyway, MS provides a plethera of live webcasts, on demand webcats and video
demos for Office 2007. Any of them is worth the time if you are interested:

On Demand Webcast of Office 2007 overview:

http://www.microsoft.com/events/Eve..."US"/^~sParams^~/sParams^~/CMTYDataSvcParams^

Upcoming live webcast where you can ask questions (A First Look at Office
Outlook 2007 - Tuesday, September 26, 2006 9 AM - 10 AM, PST) :

http://msevents.microsoft.com/CUI/W...&EventCategory=4&culture=en-US&CountryCode=US

Finally, here is the Office 2007 preview site:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/default.mspx There is a selection
for "The new Microsoft Office UI: Video Tour"

I hope this helps.

Very cool sneak preview. Two comments. I assume 2007 is a PC version
only and will not run on an older Mac. No mention of MS Entourage mail
program.

Sorry guys, I must have misunderstood the original question. I thought
Tchewy was looking for some screenshots of either platform.
