Can Word 2003 & 2007 B2TR co-exist?

Neil

Hello

I have Office 2003 Professional installed on my laptop. Some weeks ago I
installed Office 2007 Beta 2, leaving the Office 2003 applications installed
(although Outlook 2003 was replaced by Outlook 2007). I also installed the
Beta 2 of Visio and OneNote 2007.The two Office suites appeared to happily
co-exist until I installed the Beta 2 Technical Refresh. Now I have a very
annoying problem which affects Word 2003 and 2007...

Step 1: If I start Word 2003 a dialog appears with the text 'Preparing to
install...'. After ~ 30 seconds I get a second dialog appear which mentions a
problem with registering the type library for the PortalConnect.dll (I've
managed to prevent this second dialog appearing by downloading the 'missing'
DLL and putting it into the directory referenced in the second dialog).

Step 2: I can then shutdown and restart Word 2003 multiple times and it will
restart without issue.

Step 3: If I then start Word 2007 I get a dialog headed 'Configuration
Progress' with a progress bar and the text 'Configuring Microsoft Office
Professional Plus 2007 (Beta)'. This dialog remains on screen for about a
minute while the progress bar fills to 100%. Word 2007 then appears.

Step 4: I can then shutdown and restart Word 2007 multiple times and it will
restart without issue. If however I then start Word 2003 I'm back to step 1
above.

I've tried running Office 2007's Diagnostics utility but this did not help.

It does only seem to affect Word at the moment - other applications common
to both Office 2003 and 2007 startup without issue.

Is there a trick to getting Word 2003 and 2007 B2TR to co-exist happily on
the same machine?

1) That's a bug in B2TR. Nothing you can do about it.
3) I don't get that one here. I only get 1) all the time.
I think you might want to remove the DLL you installed manually. That
should get rid of the 2007 setup program running.

I have a similar problem. I have Office 2003 Professional and when I
installed Office 2007 beta 1 I had no problems with them coexisting. Now
Beta2 has retrogressed and I do have a problem and this new "feature"
randomly (or so it seems) pops up a box saying it is configuring 2007 or if I
use a 2007 Office application the configuring 2003 window pops up in various
2003 applications. It goes back and forth and sometimes it doesn't happen.
This configuration box (both 2003 and 2007) take anywhere from 30 seconds to
five minutes. This box did not pop up in the previous beta version.

I assume this is a new bug that has popped up and nothing I can do about it?

Beta 1?
I presume you are talking about Beta 2 and then installing B2TR?
Is this specific to any program, e.g. Word, or does it happen for all?

I'm having the same problem - thought it was something I'd done wrong on my
computer!

Since this started, I also can no longer save files across my network, or
open anything except as "read only". Are the two things related?

Patrick,

yes I should have said under Beta 2 I had no problems with Office 2003 and
2007. With B2TR I ransomly get the "configuring 2003" or 2007 almost
everytime I start a different Officice program application. This problem

none of these problems...just with B2TR.

Add to my last posting:

Sometimes instead of "configuring 2003" or "configuring 2007" I get
"preparing to install" and sometimes after the "preparing to install" I get
this error: "Microsoft Office 2003 Setup. Error 1911. Setup cannot register
type library for file C:\Program\Files\Microsoft
Shared\Portal\Portal\PortalConnect.dll. Contact your information Technology
department for assistance." That's not useful since this is my home computer
and I don't have an IT department for assistance. I click ignore and the
problem goes away until I try an Office 2007 program and I sometimes (not
always) get the "configuring...." window again. Did not happen in the old
Beta 2.

Run Office Diagnostics. That should prevent you from seeing it whenever
a 2007 app opens. You might see it opening with a 2003 app and giving
you an error message related to a sharepoint DLL. There is nothing you
can do about that though.

I'm having the same problem - thought it was something I'd done wrong on my
computer!

Since this started, I also can no longer save files across my network, or
open anything except as "read only". Are the two things related?

Beta 1?
I presume you are talking about Beta 2 and then installing B2TR?
Is this specific to any program, e.g. Word, or does it happen for all?

:

1) That's a bug in B2TR. Nothing you can do about it.
3) I don't get that one here. I only get 1) all the time.
I think you might want to remove the DLL you installed manually. That
should get rid of the 2007 setup program running.

Regards,
