Can Word 2007 upgrade be installed alongside Word 2003?

David Satz

Hi. I have Word 2003 and would like to keep it unchanged, but would like to
give Word 2007 a serious try. Can I buy an upgrade version of Word 2007 and
install it "side by side" with Word 2003--and eventually if I don't like Word
2007, can I uninstall it and get things back as they were before?

You can get the 60day trial.

What would you want to do in 2007 that you can't do in 2003? (If it
would be for the bibliography tool, put the money into EndNote
instead.)

Hmmm, I sure would like to do this. I changed my registry as noted at Graham's website but I note my Winword.exe in the Office 11
programs folder is now labeled as Winword.exe(3) and has zero bites. I installed Word2007 two days ago. I still have copies of my
earlier normal.dot file. I made the recommended changes but how do I now bring up Word2003? Do I need the old winword.exe? I
might have burned a copy to a CD somewhere. I may have to go looking. Or maybe I should just copy the file from my old Word2003
install CD.
Cheers,
Gil

I take it that you can no longer run Word 2003?
It appears that you have installed Office 2007 as an upgrade rather than
alongside 2003. In which case, you will undoubtedly have to re-install
Office 2003 from the original installation disc.
Files with bracketed numbers are attributable to the actions of System
Restore.

Thanks Graham.
I wonder if re-installing Word 2003 will create a problem for Word 2007? Will I then need to reintsall 2007?
I note that there is still a folder named "Office11" under C:/Programs/Microsoft Office (166 MB while "Office12" has 280 MB) . I
think I'll try putting an old Winword.exe in that folder and give it a shot.

While installing 2007, did I miss a window saying "replace" or "install alongside" when installing 2007? The CD is a new one and
says nothing on its face about being an upgrade. It's labeled "Office Home and Student 2007."
Cheers,
Gil

You cannot simply put the Winword.exe file in the folder and expect it to
work. At the very least you will have to repair Office 2003.
There is an option during installation where you can choose whether to
retain an existing Office installation. I cannot imediately bring to mind
the wording. Having Word 2003 and 2007 on the same system will result in a
few conflicts that were addressed on my web page Doug rererred to earlier.
