Can WORD read the original Macintosh MacWrite files from 1987?

Hi,
I have files created by the original MacWrite program back in 1987
(Type: WORD, Creator: MACA), but apparently WORD X does not have the
corresponding input filter for them.
Is there any way to read these files?

Some years ago I was able to open a couple of MacWrite files using a
text editor (probably TeachText, but maybe not). The result was
similar to opening a Word file manually; all the content is there, but
mixed in with funny characters representing the formatting. Don't
know if that was a fluke, but it's worth a try.
