Can Word spell check small caps text?

I use small caps formatting for presentation text because it is easy for the
speaker to read. We are having trouble with spell checking small caps,
though. When I try to spell check and change a word, the word is converted
to an all caps version of the word instead of small caps. Does anyone know a
way around this issue?

I find it curious that you would think any kind of caps (even small caps)
would be "easy for the speaker to read." This type of formatting has been
shown by numerous studies to be much more difficult to read than caps and
lowercase. You would do much better to increase the font size and line
spacing to make the text more readable.
