can Word97 or Office97 be updated?

I'm still hanging in there with Word97 which was included
with purchase of computer (and as part of Office97). The
OS is Windows98SE. Is there any point in trying to update
either Word97 or Office97?

You can certainly install all of the service packs and service releases, as
well as the security fixes. However, if this version works for you, then
why update?

Actually, I haven't been able to get these updates ...
that's the problem. Whatever the correct version is of
SR1, sr2, sr2a, sr2b, etc. will not install. I just
wondered if I should keep trying, or if the updates
weren't meant for Office97 - Word97.
