Can you change cell formats using a standard data form?

I have used Excel to create databases for some time. I usually allow Excel to
creat the data form for the input of information. I have encountered a
problem where the cell formatting is changing in the database from General to
a custom setting. Can this be caused by using the dataform, and if so can it
be directed to occur using the dataform?
