Can you change footer/grey background and number?

Using Word 2002. When viewing footers especially I would like to change
the grey background and darker grey page number to some combination more
easily readable. Can this be done?

You cannot change the shade used for field shading, but you can turn it off.
On the View tab of Tools | Options, set field shading to "None" or "When
selected."
