Can you link your Table of Contents to a Heading in the Header???

I am trying to create an automatic table of contents and
I want to link the section titles that are in my header
to the TOC but it does not recognize the text and thus
does not put it into the TOC. Is this possible to do
using Office 2000 ?????

A TOC field will not pick up anything in the header because, since the
header repeats on every page (theoretically, at least), it wouldn't know
what page number to assign. You will need to put your heading in the
document body. If you want it repeated in the header, use a StyleRef field
to pick it up.

Right, then--Joey, look up TC fields in Help--they will let you enable an
automatic TOC without showing the headings in the document body. At Insert |
Index and Tables, Table of Contents, click on Options and check the box
"table entry fields" to tell Word to use the TC fields to build the TOC
(uncheck the box for styles). You can still select the format in the
original dialog box.

Thanks very much to both of you. I just put a TC field in
front of the first word of each section that contains the
words in the Header and that works beautifully
