I synchronize my notes between my desktop and my notebook computer through my
home LAN, so far I didn't have any problems.

Same here. It also works great offline. I have been on the road with
just my tablet for all of June already, and I still have all my
notebooks as if I was syncing all the time :)

now that I have my laptop back from repair, I'm getting to the point

In short (I think to remember that there was a paper with in detail
step-by-step instructions, but this brave new blogging world it's not
to easy find things again <siiiiigh>):

The main thing is to store the ON Notebook-files only on *ONE*
computer. So beware of storing the .one-files on your notebook.

1.) Install ON on your laptop.
2.) On the desktop make the settings necessary for sharing the
directory holding the .one-files.
3.) On your laptop "map" the desktop's shared ON-directory as a "drive"
with a drive-letter. Make this persistent.
4.) Start ON and open the notebooks sitting in the desktops shared
folder.

This way ON opens the shared notebooks in it's cache and works with the
cache.
All notebooks will be synched automatically as long as the two
computers are connected.
When removing the laptop from the LAN, one can work on both machines.
As soon as the laptop is reconnected, all of the changes will
automatically be synched both ways.

HTH.
If any further questions, pls ask them.

Hi Rainald
I have Office Ultimate 2007 on Desktop (running Vista Ultimate) and
Laptop (running XP Home).

OneNote 2007 is installed on both machines and I've been searching for
a way to sync OneNote files between them. Your way seems sensible, but
I'm hitting snags. I'm hoping you can help.

I've shared the OneNote notes folder on the Desktop, then mapped this
as "O" (for OneNote) drive. The O Drive shows up on the Laptop and I
can access the folder and internal files ok. So far so good!

I went into on the Laptop OneNote "Tools-Options-Share" and modified
the Default Notebook Location and Backup Folder to both point to the O
Drive. (I left the Unfiled Notes section as I just wanted to check the
"proper" notes from the Desktop were being picked up).

I have shut down re-started the Laptop and OneNote several times, but
when I open OneNote on the Laptop, it still has just the default
initial notes from its original installation. What am I doing wrong
please?

Hi Clancolin,
I'm wondering if this posting might be coming from a previous thread. I
can not see where it might belong to :-(

Unfortunately I can not see what this refers to :-(

OK, that's the way to do things.
I went into on the Laptop OneNote "Tools-Options-Share" and modified

the O Drive. (I left the Unfiled Notes section as I just wanted to
check the "proper" notes from the Desktop were being picked up).

Yes, one can leave the "Unfiled" notebook on each computer. But over
time I found that it was the source of confusion and especially the
danger of creating doubled pages if one does not really clean up the
section day by day. So I have the "Unfiled " notebook shared too.
I have shut down re-started the Laptop and OneNote several times,
but when I open OneNote on the Laptop, it still has just the default
initial notes from its original installation. What am I doing wrong

It seems that you did not *close* the notebooks on your laptop.
Just close all of the notebooks.
Then run optimization and close ON.
Open ON again and then open the notebooks one-by-one from the shared
directory (you O-drive).
You should the see the little synchronization icon on the header of the
notebooks - in green if synching has fully been performed and red if
not.

That's all.
