Can you use ELSE in SQL

I have an update query that appends the value from one
table into another where the column is null. However
where there is no match I want to put a default
value.....How can this be done without running two
seperate update queries.

You can use IIF(), e.g.
IIF(isnull(MyField),MyDefault,MyField)
