Can you write a custom date pattern as a data validation rule?

We are using MOSS/InfoPath 2007 browser enabled forms. We have a date picker
field. I know what you are thinking, "why not use one of the date picker
formats?" We have other functionality in our form that required us to change
the data type of the date picker field to "text (string)". So unfortunately,
we do not have the option right now to use the date picker formats. The
problem is that the user can now type anything into the field and it is not
checked to make sure it's in a valid date format. We were thinking we could
probably do a check using a data validation rule but cannot find any
information on a custom date pattern to use.

Has anyone done this before? Your help is appreciated.
